McClelland Cousté, guitar duo

Concert - 23 April 2005 at 7.30 p.m.

The internationally acclaimed husband and wife guitar duo McClelland-Cousté will he giving a concert at Kinson Community Centre on Saturday 23 April.

The concert programme will include music by John Dowland and Ennemond Gautier (17th century France) played on Renaissance & Baroque lutes. Solo guitar performances include music by Leo Brouwer, Miguel Llobet, Joaquin Rodrigo, Regino Sainz de la Maza and guitar duets by Mauro Giuliani, Antoine de Lhoyer, Andrés Segovia, Celso Machado and Alfonso Montes.

Workshop - 24 April 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The workshop on Sunday will be varied and interesting - a fun packed day. There will be warm-ups and technique, a chance to learn to read tablature, large ensemble playing and time permitting, a chance to take part in a masterclass.

Biography

Vincea McClelland

Praised for her "dynamic playing style" (Rome Daily American) as well as her "skill and sensitivity" (Montreal Gazette), Canadian guitarist Vincea McClelland has given concerts throughout the world in a wide variety of venues, from the Beijing Concert Hall to Stockholm's Music Museum.

Born in Montreal, Vincea McClelland obtained her Bachelor of Music in Performance degree at the University of Toronto where she studied with Eli Kassner. She has also studied with Oscar Ghiglia and Alexandre Lagoya.

Vincea has been a featured soloist at a number of other international guitar and music festivals, including the Paris International Guitar Weekend and the Classical Guitar Festival of Great Britain at West Dean.

Vincea's solo CD "Guitar Originals" received enthusiastic acclaim internationally. The French magazine Les Cahiers de la Guitare called it "the CD of a great lady of the guitar".

Raymond Cousté

Described by the New York Times as a "remarkably versatile" musician, French guitarist and lutenist Raymond Cousté has a vast performing experience, having appeared in over 100 countries worldwide as a soloist and member of various ensembles as well as in theatre productions.

Raymond Cousté uses different lutes for the interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, and plays mainly twentieth-century music on the guitar.

Raymond studied the guitar with Ramon Cueto at the Académie de Guitare de Paris, and then with Alexandre Lagoya at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he received his Premier Prix (diploma with honours) in 1972.

For five consecutive summers he attended the master classes of Andrés Segovia and José Tomàs in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

He collaborated for many years with the highly popular early music ensemble Ars Antiqua de Paris with whom he made several recordings.

His solo CD of lute works by John Dowland received enthusiastic reviews.

McClelland-Cousté

In 1988 Vincea McClelland and Raymond Cousté received an official invitation to tour the People's Republic of China, where they were both named "Honorary Advisor" to the Guitar Societies of Shanghai and Beijing.

Their latest CD of Latin American music entitled 'Intermedio' was released in 2002 and has received several rave reviews in France, Italy, England and the USA.
