Marcos Diaz, classical guitarist

Under his father's guidance, Marcos Díaz started to play the guitar when he was 8 years old. Shortly after that, he began his studies with the guitarist Isaías Savio, teacher at the Conservatorio Dramático e Musical de Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Some years later, he moved to Spain and took up his studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Ourense where he studied under Tomás Camacho. Shortly thereafter, he enrolled in the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, where he studied under José Luis Rodrigo and won the "I Premio Extraordinario Fin de Carrera de Guitarra" in 1984. During this period, he also attended several international guitar courses receiving master classes from such prestigious artists as David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Sergio and Odair Assad.

Having been awarded first prize in several guitar competitions, he is regularly invited to take part as a soloist in important festivals and concert halls in Europe and the United States.

So far he has released three CDs for the recording label Ópera tres. One of these CDs includes pieces by Dowland, Bach, Sor, Barrios and Rodrigo and the other two contain his own guitar transcriptions of the 6 suites for solo cello by J.S.Bach. All three CDs have been extraordinarily well received by critics worldwide.

Review of Suites Para Violoncello Vol.1 J.S. Bach

Díaz turns in what can only be described as a superb performance. There are no clever gimmicks, just strong and assured interpretations that let each movement speak for itself. Doubtless there are other guitarists with the capacity to produce something similar, but at this moment I can't think of any version I'd rather hear.
