December Meeting | Quote of the month | Fiona Harrison | November meeting | Contact numbers | Future meetings | Concert diary |December Meeting
Firstly I am delighted to tell you that Sam Chapman will be our guest performer at the December meeting on 15th. Sam is a highly talented young player and we are extremely lucky to have him come and play for us.
Family and friends are of course welcome and there will be no charge for the recital. The meeting will take place as usual in the small hall (unless we are moved to the large hall) at 2 p.m. - 5.30 p.m.
Secondly, although we discussed at the last meeting the possibility of only having mince pies and then going on to Julie’s house after the meeting - this idea has been abandoned. For any disappointed folk we will be arranging more social events in the new year.
We are reverting back to our original arrangement of bringing food with us and eating at the meeting. Therefore could you all please bring with you an item of food (sweet or savoury). Please also bring enough food to cover for any guests that you bring.
Tea and coffee will be provided as usual but please bring your own soft drinks. Kinson will allow alcohol - as long as we don’t leave in a drunken brawl!
The meeting will kick off with a few pop songs led by Maurice. I think that we are playing them and not singing. (although I’m sure nobody will mind if the mood takes you). Anyone interested in joining in with Maurice must be there promptly at 2 p.m. How long this will go on for will depend on how many people want to perform afterwards.
If you would like to play, sing, dance, tell jokes etc - please write down the name of your act and the duration and give to Stephen straight away.
Sam Chapman will be playing for us at approx 4.30 p.m. He has a lovely programme of works by Villa Lobos, Lennox Berkeley , and Bach.
Sam is from Axminster in Devon and studied there with Tony Dodds and then was at the Junior Academy for three years before enrolling there full time.
In his second year there he won the Julian Bream Prize (against older students including the famed XueFei Yang) and has twice been a prize winner at the Admira Competition in Bath.
He has played with the European Youth Guitar Ensemble under Leo Brouwer and the National Youth Guitar Ensemble, the latter involving a performance accompanying John Williams in a new work by Stephen Dodgson.
Now a third year student he recently performed the Rodrigo concerto in Bridport with the Allington Jubilee Orchestra and has been invited to play the work again in Eton. As well as guitar he studies the theorbo.

Review Excerpts
An extremely persuasive artist with immaculate tone and perfectly balanced technique, she clearly gives a great deal of attention to the shape and position of every note, resulting in a performance that is always carried along by definite and informed ideas.
Classical Guitar
An elegant, vibrant and extremely talented young musician...Her full, almost Segovian tone gave body to the polish and finesse which could only have come from a musical background such as hers.
Classical Guitar
We had the great pleasure of hearing the classical guitar expertly played by Fiona Harrison...Throughout the work (Rodrigo’s Concieto de Aranjuez ) the soloist gave a relaxed and assured performance, producing a beautiful harp-like quality of tone at times.

This month we had a look atKalimba by Jurg Kindle. For those who attended Eleftheria’s workshop would of course have played this piece before. This is a great fun piece and it was nice to play it again. Well done to everyone who remembered to bring a handkerchief!
We also had a look at another new pieceChi Mai by Ennio Morricone. Stephen was not quite sure whether this piece totally worked and we may get a new version of this in January. Our other two pieces are coming along nicely.
Several members experienced problems getting to the meeting due to flooding. However we still had a very well attended meeting of 22 members. It was lovely to see former member Eddie Samwell and his duo partner Martin who came all the way from Axminster.
After coffee performers were:
- Ann, Chris and Maurice playedFugue & Trio, by J.S. Bach
- Valerie playedScherzino Americano by Peter Nuttall
- Eddie and Martin playedLatarara by Ray Burley and Homage to Paco de Lucia by Steve Marsh
- Margaret PlayedSong for Rhiannon by Stephen Kenyon.
