With much food and merriment we all played to our hearts content at our Christmas Meeting on 16th December.
Individuals, duos and small groups provided a mixed bag of light-hearted and humorous entertainment to finish 2001. John and Rosemary gave recitations and most other people played their guitars. Unfortunately no singing or dancing this year!
The quiz (even if I do say so myself) provided a great deal of fun and amusement. Teams of six and seven worked together and the top team won with a very impressive score of seventeen out of twenty one. A small prize was given to each team member and also to runners up.
Maurice provided some excellent arrangements of pop songs for us to sight-read through, which made a cheery change from our usual carols. Some were a little difficult to sight-read and a few people asked if we could actually work on one or two of them at future meetings.
Everyone had obviously worked very hard to produce oodles of scrumptious food.

Don't worry this is eally easy!

Top of pageMusic for 2002
I am sending out the newsletter a little earlier this month for two reasons. Firstly I want to give you all as much notice as possible of next month’s exciting workshop with Gerald Garcia . (see page three)
Secondly we are sending out most of the orchestral music to you in advance in an attempt to be more organised and therefore saving time at meetings. Please don’t panic, you will not be expected to play the whole lot in one meeting.
The chosen music for 2002 is:
- Palladio by Karl Jenkins.
- Suite No.2 by J.S. Bach. Rondeau
- Three dances by Stephen Kenyon.
- Irish Folk Medley by Jeremy Sparks.
The Bach Suite is very beautiful and Irish Folk Medley proved to be very effective once the dynamics were observed. Also we have of course all the words of wisdom from the Katonas stored in our memory banks!
Please keep all your music in your black folders and bring it to each meeting. If you haven’t been given a folder see me at the meeting and I will give you one.
If you have any queries regarding the music please give Ann a ring (01202 747 008).
If you find that your music is too difficult please don’t struggle and worry, Ann has some easier parts. Likewise if it is too easy just let Ann know.

This month we shall be working on Three Dances by Kenyon and Suite No.2 By Bach |

Quartetto Concertante - 13th July 2002
|
One of my ambitions as secretary of the DGS is to combine some of our guitar concerts with other instruments. Last November we took a step in that direction when we invited The Lintarre Duo. On Saturday July 13th we are taking another step forward by inviting the Quartetto Concertante (Guitar and String Trio). The quartet includes our very own conductor and DGS member Stephen Kenyon, who will of course be playing guitar. The other members are Fiona McKinley (Violin), Gillian Tolliday (Viola) and Joseph Koos (Cello). |

|
Fiona McKinley is currently in the first violin section of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Joseph Koos, who was principal cellist for the BSO for 20 years, now teaches at the Coda Music Centre. Gillian Tolliday is a freelance viola player and also teaches at Coda. Their programme will include ‘Divertimento’ by Peter Hope. Peter has been a professional composer/arranger for nearly 50 years producing orchestrations, etc. for many high ranking artists, CDs, musicals, shows and broadcasts in many musical spheres. His recent bassoon concerto was recorded on the ASV CD of English bassoon concerti. Peter and Stephen are both members of Dorset Composers' Network. The rest of programme is to be confirmed but rumoured to consist of Paganini, Brahms, Bach and Grieg. The venue for this event is still to be confirmed. The Quartetto Concertante will also be playing in Dorchester on Saturday 27th July and at Dillington Guitar Summer School on Tuesday 30th July. |
Gerald Garcia Workshop - 9th February 2002
Several members had requested that we ask Gerald Garcia to come and give a workshop this year at Pelhams. We thought this was an excellent idea and contacted him immediately. As we already have two workshops planned for April and October this year, we decided to try and squeeze it in early. Fortunately for us, Gerald was available and has agreed to come on 9th February.
Some of you will have taken part in Gerald’s workshops before and will know that they are a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work with very satisfying results.
Gerald has visited us twice before, once in 1993 and also in 1995.
If you would like to take part in this workshop please fill in the enclosed form and return it to me as soon as possible to secure your place and receive your music. The cost of the workshop will be £20. Biography
|
At his Wigmore Hall debut one critic hailed Gerald Garcia as a performer of rare quality. '... Anyone interested in hearing the guitar at its best should put Gerald Garcia at the top of their list.'. |
He has toured the Far East, Europe and Australia and was the first British guitarist to play in China in recent times. He has appeared at all the main international festivals in Britain including Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Cheltenham and the South Bank and has broadcast extensively on radio and television all over the world. Recently he has been as far as Borneo and the Arctic Circle.
Gerald Garcia has given recitals with many leading ensembles, soloists and actors including the London Sinfonietta, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Paco Pena, John Williams, Richard Baker, Prunella Scales and Leo McKern. With the flautist Clive Conway he has performed in most parts of Britain as well as at Glastonbury Pop Festival and on the ocean liner, the QE II. He has also performed throughout Britain with the Chilean group, Quimantu, and has also collaborated with Asian and oriental artists, notably the Pipa virtuoso, Wu Man.
Composers who have dedicated works to him include Michael Finnissy and Judith Weir.
He has studied Renaissance and Baroque music for the lute, guitar and vihuela, on which he is an accomplished performer. As well as composing music for film and live productions, Gerald Garcia has arranged the music for four complete recordings. Gerald Garcia has taught at the GB International Summer School for Guitarists with Gilbert Biberian with whom he was co-director, and regularly appears at summer schools in Belgium and the USA.
Visit Gerald’s new flash website if you dare! It’s worth a visit just to see the picture inspired by the storms around at the moment! http://www.geraldgarcia.com/startflash.htm
Top of pageMembers Concert on 6th July 2002
The Members Concert has been arranged for 6th July at Pelhams. We have tried to make it as late as possible this year to give ourselves a minimum of six rehearsals. We could of course always squeeze in another one or two if needed.
