As at last months meeting we again worked in our small groups for a short time before assembling the orchestra. This month we positioned ourselves into a semi circle at the far end of the hall, rather than spreading out across the whole length of it. The idea being to acclimatize ourselves with a similar seating arrangement to a concert situation. This we also did at Gerald’s workshop, obviously for the same reason.
We worked steadily through the new pieces and also the ones that we started last month. We will be building up our repertoire each month, in preparation for our concert on July 6th.
This months after coffee players were:
- Chris, Julie, Margaret, Katie and Ann - Gaillarde 2 & 3, Pavane de Spaigne by M. Praetorius and The Fairy Round by A. Holborne
- John S. - Malagueña by Robin Pearson
- Valerie - Study in Bm by Sor, Passacaile by R. DeVisée and La Gatica by A. Lauro
- John .E - a selection of pieces by M Ponce
- Maurice - Sonata in D by D. Scarlatti
- Stephen - Variations on a theme by Mozart by F. Sor
Next Meeting
The next meeting will take place on 17th
March 2002at 5.45 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. in the
Small Hall.
Please note that we change to the evening time.
The first part of the meeting will be our AGM. Last years minutes will be available. Hopefully there will still be lots of time left for playing.
This month we shall be working on Sarabande and Bouree I and II of the Bach Suite. Also the Rondeau and Menuet that we have already practised and Stephen Kenyon’s Dances.
Quote of the Month
"I would rather write 10,000 notes than one letter of the alphabet."

Quartetto Concertante Venue
|
The venue for the Quartetto Concertante concert on July 13th will be St. Stephen’s Church, St. Stephens Road, Bournemouth. This is a brilliant venue for a concert as the acoustics are excellent. Parking is not a problem as there are car parks very close by. Quartetto Concertante (see January newsletter) will be performing the brilliant and charming quartet written for them by Dorset composer Peter Hope. |

African Drumming
|
This was a very exciting occasion where rhythms, cross-rhythms and timing were the essential features. There were 20 drums and the course was a sell-out. Most of us were new, but others had come to improve their skills. This could be a tremendous help to our guitar ensembles where listening and time keeping are vital. The next event is at Church House in Wimborne on 15 June, 9.30-12.30. Details from Mrs Hilda Butler 01202 848859. |
Music Library
We are looking for a volunteer to take over the music library. Geoff Simmons has so far been looking after our music for us but feels that as he unable to attend regularly that it would be best to hand it over to somebody else. Our thanks to Geoff for doing such a wonderful job of cataloguing the music and also providing stacking boxes to keep it all in.
The advantages of managing the music library is of course that you will have all the music on hand for your own use without having to wait for monthly meetings.
We need somebody who is fairly strong as the boxes are a little bit heavy and also who attends the meetings regularly. You will also need to have a little bit of storage space in your house.
There are three stacking boxes but they are each only about half full, so consequently the music could be stored in one big pile and just organised into the appropriate boxes at the meetings.
If you would like to take over the music library please see me on Sunday.
Top of pagePremiere of Guitar Concerto by Stephen Kenyon
|
I am not sure if diaries for 2003 are yet for sale, but if they are you will need to rush out and buy one immediately! The premiere of Stephen Kenyon’s first Guitar Concerto will take place on Saturday 21 June 2003. Since this is Midsummer Night the programme will also include Mendelssohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream (one his most popular works), along with Schubert's 5th Symphony (ditto). The soloist will be the renowned Brazilian virtuoso Fabio Zanon and the orchestra, led by BSO co-principal Jack Macguire will be a superb hand-picked ensemble specially selected for the occasion. The venue will be Dorchester's St Mary's church, an excellent and popular venue for orchestral concerts. Ticket prices etc. to be confirmed. |
