Spring Concert | Quote of the month | New Member | March Meeting | Next meeting | Romeo and Juliet | Future Meetings | Concert Diary | Contact NumbersSpring Concert
Spring is here, which means that apart from celandines covering the banks and taking over the world, our members concert is just around the corner.
Saturday 10th May to be precise!
Our concert was very well attended last year and we had extremely favourable reports from several members of the audience. A remarkable effect was achieved due to all the hard work put in by members and of course not forgetting our musical director. We could not have done it without him. I hope that we can repeat our success this year. Please don't leave all your practice until the last minute!
It is always a good idea to form small groups and practice together at each others houses.
If you are unable to play in the concert would you please let me know at the next meeting. If you will not be at the meeting please let me know by phone, email or pigeon post. This is really important so that we can make sure that we have an even distribution of parts.
I hope that the concert will be an enjoyable experience for all the members as well as the audience.
Time
We will meet at Pelhams at 5 p.m. for a final rehearsal. The concert starts at 7.30 p.m.
It may be a good idea to bring a drink and a snack to keep you going before the concert. The bar will be open during the interval.
Photograph
I am hoping to take a few formal group photographs for the Web site and future publicity, possibly between the rehearsal and the performance, when everyone is dressed up in their finery. Weather permitting I will take them outside.
If there are any good photos I will get copies for anyone who wants one.
Music
Ensemble music included in the concert will be:
- Concerto in A Minor by Telemann
- Kalimba by Jürg Kindle
- Calistoga by Colin Tommis
- Eine Kleine Nachtmusic by Mozart
The order that the music will be played in will be specified prior to the last rehearsal.
If you have a page turn on page three of Kalimba could you please photocopy it and sellotape it to page two.
Black Folders
If there are any new members who I have not given a black folder, please see me on Sunday. If anyone else needs a new one through wear and tear or loss please rush out and buy a new one or you may purchase one from me - cost £1.70.
Please put your name on the inside and not on the outside cover.
Dress
Black trousers, white shirts and bow ties for men.
Black trousers or skirt and coloured blouse for the ladies. No patterns please.
Last Rehearsal and A.G.M
We have only one more rehearsal before the actual day. This will be Sunday 27th April at 5.45 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. This extra rehearsal is for those playing in the concert.
This date will also be our A.G.M. This will take place first. I hope you will be able to come to this part of the evening even if you will not be playing afterwards.
Meal Afterwards
If anyone would like to go for a meal after the concert please let me know on Sunday.

Careful attention was given to Stephen’s ensemble exercises. All newly laid out for us on the same sheet.
Training our ears seems to be half of the battle but we will get there eventually. We were reminded to damp all of the six strings when we have a bar of rests and not just the last note played, otherwise that note will set off harmonics which ring into the next bar.
We concentrated this month on Concerto in A minor and Kalimba.
An extended coffee break gave everyone ample time to peruse the music brought along by Russell Beeson. A vast quantity of music piled high on two tables ensured there were bargains for every taste and also every level of playing difficulty. I can’t imagine that anyone went home empty handed.
The music that was left over was purchased by the Society for our music library.
A big thank you to Russell for coming along with his music sale.
After coffee players were:
- Jayne Grinstead joined Ann on flutes, along with Maurice, Chris, Julie, Katie, Howard and Margaret on guitars playing Andantino con Variazioni by Mozart.
- Andrew R. played Last of the Summer Wine by Ronnie Hazlehurst, Andantino, Opus 35 No 2 by Fernando Sor and his own composition titled Winterborne.
- Bill R. played Air by Phillip Smith and Catari Folksong.
- Richard played Españoleta by Gasper Sanz
- Stephen played Fantasia on an Elizabethan Tune by Eric Saxson Snell, and two of his own compositions Maumsbury Rings and Dancing Ledge.
Next Meeting
The next meeting will take place on 13th April at 5.45 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. in the small hall. There will be no solos after the coffee break as we are going to concentrate on our ensemble music for the entire meeting.

23rd July - 8th August
Our friends at B.O.A.T are performing Romeo and Juliet this year on Brownsea Island.
For those interested in going as a group I will be bringing a list of dates on Sunday. Please bring your diaries and we can cross off any dates that you are unable to make and try to organise a day when we can all go.
We do need to book early this year as this is one of the most popular of Shakespeare's plays. The cost this year is £15, which includes your boat fare and landing fee. Please bring your cheque books or money and I will book it. Unfortunately there is no discount for group bookings.
Last year a group of us had a brilliant time when we went to see King Lear. We took a picnic and some of us went for a walk on the Island first.
For obvious reasons it is advisable to bring some light waterproof outdoor wear!
