The trusty troupers
Against the general hubbub of the great hall, Rosemary and Joy enthusiastically played with the dedication of trusty troupers!
For those stopping to listen, their gentle guitar duets were audible from the speakers on the wall, creating a more tranquil atmosphere in the hall.
|
They remained undaunted throughout the chatter of the crowds, the clatter of the stall holders, the Cliff Richard impersonator in the car park and the squeals of delight from the children in the bouncy castle. Hey, wait a minute, is that pink castle being attacked by two giant PINK octopuses? |
Attack by the PINK Octopuses.
|
After Rosemary and Joy - Helen, Katie, Ann and myself took centre stage. We thought that we were playing the same piece at the same time but who knows! We had a enjoyable, fun afternoon anyway.
Pelhams Community Centre did themselves proud with this years festival. Last year they attracted over 4,000 visitors - I suspect that this year there were even more.
From the many stalls selling plants and produce I managed to find my favourite gardener's delight tomato plants which I had failed to find in the garden centres. Katie was also delighted with her purchase of home made marmalade, especially as she has been too busy playing to go to the supermarket.
There were the many things on offer for all the family. Découpage, chess, face painting, historic photographs, paintings, belly dancing, to name but a few.
For those who bought raffle tickets - the draw will be made at the Table Top Sale on Friday 20th June at 10.30 a.m.

The next meeting will take place on 15th June at 5.45 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. in the small hall. Please bring all your orchestra music with you.
Photographs
I have had two sizes of photographs printed of the orchestra at the Spring Concert. 12 x 6 (£4.99) and 10 x 5 inches ( 99p). I will be bringing them along on Sunday for you to see. If anybody would like one I will be taking orders, so please bring some money with you.

When one sees some of the things that other people do, we probably look quite normal

Top of pageMay Meeting
Well done to those members who still had the stamina after the efforts of the previous Saturday's concert to attend the May monthly meeting.
We played through some music with our sight-reading hats on. We started with Gaspar Sanz's Fuga and Villanos which soon took shape and were sounding good. We then turned our attention to playing some Greek music. Speak to me by Manos Hatzidakis and Greek Dance in a 9/8 rhythm.
Stephen instructed us in the art of observing a pause with the use of the conductor's baton, how to interpret some musical shorthand used in the score and then coaxed us through the very unusual 9/8 rhythms. According to our conductor we made quite a good job of it.
Our after tea concert followed:
- Sarah played Opus 35 No. 4 by Fernando Sor.
- Matthew played Lochan Brae by Stephen Kenyon and Packington's Pound by Francis Cutting.
- Bill R played Sicilana by A Meissonnier and Alcantara by Baden Powell
- Terry played Sound of Bells by Pernambuco
- Richard played Chôros No. 1 by Villa Lobos
- Stephen played four of his own compositions Up and Running, Reflections, Hanging Around and Dancing under Trees then Sarabande and Allemande - BWV 905 by J S Bach
We ended the meeting with a short discussion.
Stephen said the concert had been well received; everyone did well. Richard stated we have doubled the profit on this years concert compared to last years.
Stephen explained how the exchange visit to Derby would work. This unique opportunity for the Orchestra to accompany John Mills is open to all members. It was decided there would be a full discussion at next month meeting and all those wanting to take part must state their intentions.

We are going to play our Telemann Concerto (Stephen and Maurice will be playing the solo parts) and Kalimba.
However, there is limited space.
If you took part in Spring Concert on 10th June, feel you are confident on your part and would like to take part in the Ferndown concert, please phone or email Ann Plumb before the Sunday meeting.
Please bring your dusters on Sunday as we may be able to have another practise of the pieces.
Tickets for family and friends must be purchased in advance and are available from Douglas Lock 01202 896984.
Top of pageHonorary Members
Last year as a token of our appreciation John Skinner and Joan Lucas, two of our long standing and valued members were given Honorary Membership to the society.
John and Joan have been members since the societies early days and have supported and participated in society events for almost 20 years.
It was recently brought to my notice that there had been no formal notification in the newsletter. Apologies for the lateness of the announcement.
