A gentle reminder - our next meeting will not be the third Sunday in the month but the second. We also return to our evening times. Please remember to turn up as we can’t have a meeting without you! It will take place on 9th March 2003at 5.45 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. in the Small Hall.
Music Sale
After our usual orchestral session there will be a music sale. We will be having an extended coffee break to give everyone loads of time to have a good rummage.
Russell Beeson from Sherborne will be coming along with a great pile of music, magazines and also two guitars for sale. Russell and his wife used to be very keen guitarists, but have not played for a number of years. They no longer have room for all their guitar stuff - hence the sale.
The music will not be individually priced but in piles of 10p, 50p, £1 etc.

The two guitars for sale are:
The magazines are:

There will be plenty of bargains, so please don’t forget to bring your money!
Informal concert
Jayne Grinstead (flute) has been invited to come along and perform in our informal concert. Jayne and Ann (also on flute) along with six other members will be playing Mozart’s Andantino con Variazioni.
Top of pageThe Story of a Visiting Conductor
A highly autocratic and self-opinionated visiting conductor was rehearsing the London Philharmonic Orchestra for a concert to be given that night at the Royal Albert Hall.
Things were not going well, and the second violins were having particular difficulty getting the phrasing and timing as the great man wanted. When the conductor's mood finally reached boiling point, he stopped the rehearsal and threatened the violins that if they couldn't play their instruments, they would each be given two sticks and sent to the timpani section.
In the icy silence that followed, a voice from the timpani section could clearly be heard; "And when you find they can't drum, you can take away one stick and make them into conductors."
(Does anyone know where this story originally came from?)

"When I re-read my theoretical works, I can no longer understand them".
Quoted in Saint-Saëns, Portraits et Souvenirs, 1903
Top of pageFebruary Meeting
We started off with Stephen’s ensemble exercises. Obviously the idea behind them is to apply what we have learnt to our ensemble pieces. I am certain that doing these exercises regularly is the key to successful ensemble playing.
We had a play through some new music that the committee purchased to use in our concert, Concerto in A minor by G.P Telemann.
A little piece of advice from Stephen was that although your part may not look very difficult it is still important and still needs to be practised in-between meetings. Part 2 need to finger their part so that they are not using open e’s which were sounding a bit harsh and also ringing on.
Personally I don’t think that it is as easy as it looks and some of it needs careful fingering.
Our informal concert started and finished with Dowland this month:
- Ann, Chris, Julie, Katie and Margaret played Lachrimae Antiquae, Semper Dowland Semper Dolens, Captain Digorie Piper’s Galliard and Mrs. Nichols’ Almand by J.Dowland
- Margaret played Study No. 3 by M. Carcassi
- Sarah played Allemande by J.S. Bach
- Matthew played Excersie No 3. Op 35 by F. Sor
- Richard played Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man by Jerome Kern, arranged Duarte
- Andrew and Stephen played No te namores neniña (trad Spanish arr J Leathwood), Gavotte (attrib Martini) and Grace by Gilbert Biberian
- Stephen played Preludium, Earl of Essex, His Galliard, Sir John Smith, His Almain and A Fancy by J Dowland.
AGM
This years AGM has been scheduled for Sunday 27th April.
It has been decided to use this extra rehearsal for the AGM instead of our regular meeting date on 13th as not all the committee can make that date.
The AGM should only take up the first half of the meeting and there will still be lots of time left for playing.
